My first marathon was the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. in 1995. I had no idea what I was doing when I signed up and somehow managed to finish the race with a time of 3:50:37. The low point was when I missed the Vaseline section and mistakenly applied Bengay to my upper legs! That resulted in a tremendous kick at the end. The following year I dropped over 36 minutes from the finishing time and in 1997 completed the 26.2 miles in 3:11:54; Vice-President Al Gore finished in 4:58:25. The running bug had bit me by then and I knew that I wanted to run in Boston someday.
It took nearly a decade but I qualified for Boston at the Rock and Roll Marathon in Arizona. My time was 3:08:54.
